This session will focus on the tax planning and strategy implications that arise when clients and colleagues become more active users of bitcoin and other cryptoassets. Even with price volatility and regulatory ambiguity, there are tax factors that practitioners need to be aware of as usage and adoption of crypto continues to increase. Focused on practical applications and examples around both basic and more advanced crypto tax planning, attendees will leave with actionable business intelligence with which to advise current and future clients. In addition to these practitioner focused insights, pending legislation and possible future tax changes will be put forward and discussed. At the end of the session, resources will be provided for those in attendance looking to learn more. 

After attending this session, participants will be able to :
 
         1. Describe and explain the current state of the cryptoasset landscape, and tax marketplace 
         2. Document and analyze tax regulations, as well as potential future tax changes that are being debated 
         3. Outline and articulate how various cryptoassets are classified and treated from a tax planning perspective 
         4. Advise clients and colleagues as to some practical ways and methods to and account for, and plan, crypto taxes 
         5. Inform colleagues and clients where are some of the best places to learn more, obtain more information, and stay abreast of recent crypto tax changes 

 


Speaker Bio


Dr. Sean Stein Smith, CPA, CGMA

Assistant Professor
City University of New York – Lehman College

Sean is an assistant professor at the City University of New York – Lehman College. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Wall Street Blockchain Alliance, where he chairs the Accounting Working Group. Sean sits on the Advisory Board of Gilded and is a strategic advisor to the Central Bank Digital Currency Think Tank. Sean also serves as an Advisor to Crescent City Capital, a cryptoasset investment fund.
 
Sean is a widely recognized expert in the areas of blockchain and cryptoassets, especially as they connect to accounting and financial services. His thought leadership is sought after by academic and industry organizations, and includes his efforts to develop and teach the first ever courses focusing on blockchain and crypto at Lehman College beginning in 2021. 
 
Sean has also been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting, and has been named a past winner of the NJCPA Ovation Award for Innovation. He has also been named a 40 under 40 in the accounting profession from 2017-2021 by CPA Practice Advisor and the NYSSCPA in 2021. Sean was named on the NJBIZ Power 50 in Accounting in 2021 & 2022. He was also awarded the Outstanding Young CPA of the Year Award by the AICPA in 2022.
